Working Principle of Oil Impregnated Bearings

Oil impregnated bearings are manufactured through powder metallurgy sintering technology, forming a uniform and interconnected micro-porous structure inside the metal matrix. Before formal use, the bearing is fully soaked and impregnated with high-performance lubricating oil, and the micro-pores stably store a large amount of lubricant through capillary action and surface tension. In the static standby state, the lubricating oil is firmly locked in the internal pore structure without leakage or volatilization.

During equipment operation, the friction between the rotating shaft and the bearing surface generates slight heat, which causes the bearing matrix and internal air to expand. The expanded pore structure squeezes out the stored lubricating oil, forming a uniform and thin protective oil film on the friction contact surface. The oil film effectively isolates direct metal contact, reduces friction resistance and abrasion loss. When the equipment stops running and the temperature drops, the pores shrink and restore their original state, and the excess lubricating oil is re-absorbed into the interior, realizing cyclic and reusable self-lubrication. This passive temperature and rotation-triggered lubrication mechanism enables the bearing to maintain stable lubrication effect for a long time without external oil injection and maintenance.

Core Structural and Performance Advantages

Zero Routine Maintenance

Different from traditional bearings that require regular oiling, oil change and grease replenishment, oil impregnated bearings complete lubrication supply through internal oil storage circulation. There is no need for manual maintenance intervention in the whole service cycle, which completely eliminates the maintenance links such as regular lubrication inspection, oil supplement and cleaning. It avoids equipment shutdown caused by maintenance operations and solves the hidden dangers of performance degradation caused by missed maintenance, improper lubrication dosage and wrong lubricant selection.

Low Friction and High Wear Resistance

The in-situ formed oil film always exists on the friction surface during operation, which greatly reduces the friction coefficient between the shaft and the bearing. The uniform lubrication state avoids dry friction and scratch wear of metal surfaces, effectively inhibits abrasive wear and fatigue wear of components. Compared with traditional bearings with intermittent lubrication, oil impregnated bearings have more stable friction performance, lower surface wear rate, and longer service life under the same working conditions.

Excellent Environmental Adaptability

The fully enclosed internal oil storage structure will not produce oil dripping, splashing and lubricant leakage, which can keep the equipment and working environment clean. It is suitable for dust-prone, humid, closed and difficult-to-maintain working scenarios. Meanwhile, the integrated structure of matrix and lubricant has good anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion properties, which can resist the erosion of conventional environmental media and maintain stable working performance in long-term continuous operation.

Long-Term Operating Cost Reduction Mechanism

Labor Cost Saving

Mechanical equipment equipped with traditional bearings needs professional maintenance personnel to conduct regular inspection, lubrication and oil replacement. A large number of repetitive maintenance work consumes stable human resource costs. Oil impregnated bearings realize zero daily maintenance, which greatly reduces the frequency of equipment inspection and maintenance work, cuts down the investment of professional maintenance manpower, and effectively reduces the daily operation labor cost of mechanical equipment.

Material and Energy Cost Reduction

Traditional bearing operation requires continuous consumption of lubricating grease and lubricating oil, and frequent oil replacement will produce a large amount of waste lubricant, resulting in material waste and additional replacement costs. The internal circulating lubrication mode of oil impregnated bearings has extremely low lubricant loss, no frequent oil replacement is required in the whole life cycle, and the consumption of lubricating materials is greatly reduced. In addition, the low-friction operation characteristic reduces the friction power consumption of equipment, realizing energy-saving operation and lowering long-term energy consumption costs.

Downtime and Replacement Cost Control

Frequent maintenance of traditional bearings and wear failure caused by insufficient lubrication will lead to unplanned equipment shutdown, affecting continuous production and bringing indirect economic losses. The stable self-lubricating performance of oil impregnated bearings reduces component wear failure rate, extends the service life of bearings and matching parts, and reduces the frequency of component replacement. At the same time, zero-maintenance operation avoids production shutdown caused by maintenance work, ensures the continuous and stable operation of equipment, and greatly reduces the comprehensive operating and maintenance replacement costs in the whole life cycle.

Application Scenarios and Practical Value

Oil impregnated bearings are widely applicable to precision automation equipment, household electrical appliances, medical equipment, small and medium-sized transmission machinery and other fields. For low-load, medium-high speed and long-term continuous operating equipment, their self-lubricating and zero-maintenance advantages are particularly prominent. In closed equipment structures and scenarios where manual maintenance is difficult to operate, oil impregnated bearings effectively make up for the defects of traditional bearing maintenance difficulties and high failure rate. By optimizing the friction state of transmission components, reducing maintenance links and controlling operating costs, it provides an efficient and economical component solution for the stable operation of modern mechanical systems.

Oil impregnated bearings rely on unique porous oil storage structure and passive self-lubricating mechanism to achieve long-term stable operation without manual maintenance. Compared with traditional lubricated bearings, they have significant advantages in friction reduction, wear resistance, environmental adaptability and service stability. In the long-term equipment operation process, oil impregnated bearings can effectively save labor maintenance costs, reduce lubricant material consumption, avoid equipment shutdown losses and reduce component replacement frequency. With the continuous upgrading of mechanical equipment towards high efficiency, stability and low consumption, self-lubricating zero-maintenance oil impregnated bearings will become an important development direction of precision transmission components, bringing significant economic benefits and operational value to mechanical system operation.
